The Grapefruit Diet is a weight loss diet built solely around the humble grapefruit. Grapefruit contains enzymes that make our body burn fat for energy, resulting in quick and easy weight loss.
The grapefruit diet, also known as the Hollywood diet and erroneously as the Mayo Clinic Diet, is a short-term fad diet that has existed in the United States since at least the 1930s.
Specifics of the diet vary widely, but it usually involves eating half a grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice with each meal and significantly reducing caloric intake, often to below 800 calories per day. There is some research that shows eating half a grapefruit with meals three times each day can help people lose small amounts of weight, about three or four pounds in 12 weeks. However, there's a big difference between eating grapefruit within an overall healthy, balanced diet vs. following the standard grapefruit diet, which is not recommend for anyone.
Eat grapefruit at every meal. Dieter has the choice of eating 1/2 a grapefruit or drinking 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice and the enzyme is touted to burn away body fat. This diet plan does not allow most complex carbs. Consumption of most vegetables is encouraged and dieter are allowed to prepare them in generous amounts of butter. Consumption of coffee or tea is allowable.
12 days on - 2 days off
Breakfast
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
2 Eggs (any style)
2 Slices Bacon
Lunch
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
Meat (any style, any amount)
Salad (any kind of dressing)
Dinner
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
Meat (any style, any amount) (fish may be substituted for meat)
Vegetables (any green, yellow, or red vegetables cooked in butter or any seasoning)
Bed Time Snack
1 glass tomato juice or 1 glass Skim milk
Vegetables Allowed
Red onions, green onions, bell peppers, radishes, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, peas.
Vegetables to Avoid
White onions, potatoes, celery.
